Types of Argumentative and Expository Essays

An expository essay employs the first person perspective which is commonly referred to as “I,” to tell its story. An expository essay usually tells a story that a student already has an opinion on. Thus, they are not usually part of the student’s argument. The typical expository essay describes the life of a historical figure, piece of equipment, or another significant item from history. Since it is typically presented as an opinion piece the reader does not know whether their opinion is original or not.

The thesis statement will be the primary subject of the essay, as the title suggests. The thesis is the most important part of the essay. The thesis of the student is typically an interpretation of something they have read, heard, or observed. The introduction will introduce readers to the subject and the essay’s introduction will typically also include the thesis statement.

The expository essay is yet another type of argumentative essay. In this kind of essay the thesis is introduced and the writer proceeds to describe various problems that are related to the particular thesis. A problem is typically linked to another, or is linked to other problems. These essays are usually longer than argumentative essays, and can go as long as two hundred fifty words. The conclusion is typically short once the essay has covered all relevant arguments. Sometimes the conclusion is not enough.

Expository essays can be challenging to write because they are too brief to express what you believe you know. You could also do without the thesis statement altogether and just use the rest of the essay to describe your ideas. This kind of essay typically is more effective if it’s more specific than argumentative, because if it is too broad there is no point in adding additional ideas to it.
